“This school year was the first year I was open and out with my students ( I teach 4th grade so it’s a delicate balance sometimes) The first day of school I was showing pictures and introducing myself. I showed pics of my children and my dogs and the last picture I showed was the picture of my wife and I. The hands immediately shot up and I thought “ here we go....”. The comments ranged from “ my grandma has a corgi too” to “ Your son goes to UT, I want to go to UT”. There was not one mention of my wife, other than questioning her profession and if they would get to meet her.

From this 1st day I have been amazed at how my students have protected and loved me. My wife has visited several times and they adore her. I even had a parent who told me she didn’t know how to tell her daughter that the girls uncle was gay ( they are a conservative family that have been anti LGBTQ+). She thanked me for being open and has now embraced her brother and her girls were even at his wedding. All of this to say you never know who you touch or who you show it is okay to just be YOU.”
